Cevat Sakir, the “pioneer of the Blue Cruise”
Bodrum thanks dissidents

The Turkish author Cevat Sakir Kabaagaçli could not keep a closed mouth. When he expresses himself in 1925 in a newspaper article positively about deserters in army , he is condemned to long-standing  arrest in Bodrum castle..
However, for him the punishment becomes the reward. He falls in love with the beauties of this scenery and begins to investigate them systematically. The Turkish authorities get delation of the fact that her prisoner his life enjoys as never before.  They break  arrest in Bodrum castle , move the unpopular author in the dark inland. There he languishes some years. But soon  the author returns into his "happy arrest" and from 1957 investigates the coast together with his friends, with authors and artists, in the small boats of the sponge divers .
In his travel reports he calls these journeys blue cruise. The today's tourism industry took a formulation and an idea with pleasure.
He had designed a pseudonym "Fischer of Halikarnassus" and also with this pseudonym he wrote his recollections much read in Turkey.
The unique design of the Turkish Gulet connects practically oriented tradition with the suitable application with the blue cruise
Boatbuilding in Bodrum
Today traditional wooden ships are built primarily in to the boatyards by Bodrum, Bozburun, Marmaris or Fethiye. There are, in the meantime, more than 30 boatyards in the Bodrum part of town  Icmeler. The busy activity in Bodrums dockyards has changed only some from in the antiquity.
Many of the ships which one sees today are a modern implementation of substantially older boat kinds. Today thus one makes a distinction between 3 types of Gulets. The Tirhandil,  has been direct descendant of an antique Aegean design and up to not all at long time the favorite ship of the local sponge divers. This type is seldom longer than 18 m.
Today, however, the preferential ships are the classical Gulets, offsprings of the Italian Gouletta, the ketch with rounded rear or "Ayna Ketch" (with reflecting rear). These are ideal charter boats, with the very wide width and the spacious deck a lot of place offer for comfortable cabins under deck and a generous life in deck outside.
The prevailing building material is still the local Aegean pine. The wood is bought from timber merchants at the place or from the forestry commission, after it was hit in the close woods. In former times trees were so bent with the help of a pulley that they grew (according to intended purpose) in a certain direction.
The Gulet   has become today
in a perfect holidays yacht , the number of the passengers amounts between eight and sixteen people who are accommodated mostly in double cabins. Catering, drinks are included. Modern yachts have comfort and offer it you.
You need to worry about nothing. The narrow being together of a small group of people generates aboard an atmosphere of the friendship and solidarity. Besides, travel agencies arrange tours with a certain group of people or on you personally fitted.
With cabin charter catering, drinks are  in the price included. Modern yachts have every comfort and offer you all comfort. They need to look after nothing. The narrow being together of a small group of people generates aboard an atmosphere of the friendship and common characteristic. Besides, travel agencies arrange tours with a certain group of people or on you personally fitted.
In contrast to cruises on gigantic ocean liners you have possibility with small yacht   to discover concealed beauties on the coasts and also to stay once longer than planned. The small harbours and jetties offer a more intimate and more personal experience of the coastal life which is never given you on big ships. The life on a "Gulet" resembles in many things at a good hotel, every room "with sea look", but with the advantage of a constantly changing scenery.
An event of special kind has become the annual Bodrum cup, as a seasonal end thought for the traditional Turkish wooden ships. The aim of this event always taking place in the third October week is to promote the interest in the Gulet and to develop the abilities of the captains and teams in the sailings.
The first Bodrum cup was carried out in 1989. At that time these were no even more than 20 ships which went to the start, now sinde already every Jahe more than 100. Beside the typical Gulets and Tirhandils of the Turkish coast, private owner's yachts can also take part. According to size and building material or character the ships are divided into different categories.
